Full Review Original Score 6/10 Apr 9, 2019 The Boat is a beautifully shot, well performed, and sharply edited thriller. It sails into uncharted territory and proves to be one of the year's best surprises. Hold fast! Full Review Original Score 4/5 Mar 30, 2019 It is to the Azzopardis' credit that they maintain the aura of mystery until the very end, but one cannot help but ask the question are they already thinking of The Return of The Boat? Full Review Original Score 4/5 Mar 2, 2019 As the only man on screen, and with minimal dialogue, Joe Azzopardi commands attention from the off. Full Review Oct 31, 2018 The Boat is never boring; and that is saying something for a film that includes a 30-minute sequence where the protagonist is locked in a bathroom. Full Review Original Score Oct 31, 2018 Azzopardi's physical demeanor effectively conveys the fisherman's confusion and desperation, but the lack of any clear narrative resolution lends scant significance to the role. Full Review Oct 30, 2018 The film is solid, but it feels resigned to the limitations of its premise rather than actively pushing against its boundaries. Is there anything inherently wrong with that? Not really. Does it make for a safer, more boring film as a result? Undoubtedly. Full Review Oct 3, 2018 [It's] a film that cleverly turns some of the film's elements, like water and the ship itself, into a ferocious monster that forces our protagonist to exhibit some quick thinking in order to survive his unbelievable experiences upon a sea-faring vehicle. Full Review Original Score 4/5 Oct 3, 2018 Ranks easily among the year's best horror films, best adventure films, and best films period. Welcome aboard indeed. Full Review Sep 23, 2018 Prev Next Do you think we mischaracterized a critic's review? 8/10 Intense If you want a bunch of special effects, this is not the movie for you. If you want to be spoon fed a neat little story, this is not the movie for on the other hand, you want a thriller or a movie that makes you think even after it's over, check this movie with one character can be difficult to pull off but this one is done so well. The acting was believable and you really felt his fear and frustration. There are some very tense and claustrophobic moments and they were filmed makeup was also extremely well done and consistent. This is a miss on many movies in my opinion. Bad makeup "injuries" can really pull me out of the story but that was not an issue with this your stupid phone down and let yourself get lost in the tension of a great film. 12 out of 12 found this helpful. Permalink 7/10 Not your mainstream film Warning Spoilers Really enjoyed, my understanding is Aelous was the god of winds which resulted in sailors becoming lost. The story is simple, a fisherman while out on a small boat from Valletta, Malta, comes across a strange mist, in the mist is an abandoned boat, he ties his boat to it to explore but when he returns his boat is missing. My interpretation is the boat challenges the man, he survives the challenges and stops the boat from sinking and the boat returns him to shore. It is a one actor film and a bit slow but I found it gripping. 17 out of 20 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 6/10 Why the low ratings? I didn't expect much and it turned out to be quite alright. Makes you want to keep watching and maybe this is the effect of the current lockdown in 2021 but felt like it was intense and mysterious till the end. Always liked a sea film and this doesn't disappoint despite a one man, one place scenario. 28 out of 31 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 10/10 I was totally engrossed! I don't know what people here are cribbing about but I found this movie very engrossing right from the start to the end. I literally felt myself there lost at sea and those moments of pain, confusion and delusion had me at the edge of my seat. Put it this way, I watched this movie at 0200 am and still had my eye's wide open. The script is rare and the actor did justice to his role. What I liked most were the camerawork, background music and scenery out in the lost wild you're a fan of survival movies, this one is for you. 87 out of 130 found this helpful. It takes some doing to carry a full length movie by yourself and Joe Azzopardi makes a cracking job of it. I am guessing his brother is the co-writer and director and what a talented pair they are. I have see million dollar hollywood blockbusters not pull off the tension and atmosphere of menace that there is here. I love how the boat has a personality, it's playing with the sailor, testing him even. The scene with the dolphins is superb. All round it was a great 90 minutes of fun, give this a watch. 8 out of 9 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 7/10 Solid 7/10 My advice is to anyone wanting to watch this is if you don't like films where there is very little dialogue and things that remain unexplained and left to the imagination then maybe skip this one. However the concept and execution of what this is trying to be was well done. Not sure why one of the other reviewers had to have a pop at the director / dad of the star of this as it doesn't really describe the film to the rest of us in any way. But If you like "film" and have patience and enjoy a little bit of horror and suspense thrown in there, you'll enjoy it. 32 out of 36 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 8/10 Hidden gem I can't tell you the joy I found in coming across this movie, hidden away in a cosy corner of Amazon Prime where light doesn't often course I've seen horror movies I've liked, or else I wouldn't watch any now. But this movie...it just gets it. It makes no foolish rookie mistakes just name one thing horror movies do too much; it doesn't do it. It is that simple, quiet, leisurely, atmospheric, minimalist horror movie that you've been looking for. Unless you haven't been looking for haven't read the other reviews and I can anticipate that at least one person will say "it's not a horror movie" or "nothing happens" or "left me with questions". But this isn't that kind of horror movie. It's not an objectively better style but we see so little of have been hoping and hoping to see something like this for so long. I won't say it's a masterpiece but in a world where even the horror fans go on and on about how this genre has not yet quite found its way, we get something that is solid. I can take it seriously, it's never trashy or heavy handed; it takes its time, it lets you feel the moment, it doesn't take you for a ride, you're just along for it. It cuts into you with a quite, mysterious power. It does not compromise in its structure and know a lot of people will find this as affecting as an episode of a Michael Portillo Documentary but I was captivated. 24 out of 35 found this helpful. Although it may only have 1 page of dialogue through out the whole film, I think the director is trying to put the viewer through the same loneliness and despair as the character. If the protagonist had narrated or spoke more it might disturb the sombre direction of the plot is very light. It's basically about a guy trapped on a boat... Not much else to say, besides the subtle instances where he might not be alone... I'll leave it at this isn't a great film or a film I'll give a 2nd viewing but it was intriguing and kept me glued till the very end. The film longs for some better editing though. Anyone who says it's terrible really doesn't understand the message or slow burn journey the filmmakers are taking them it's worth the watch if you're into something a little less mainstream. 10/10 Excellent It depends on whether you like these kind of films, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definite scary moments, and some things I definitely wouldn't have done, but watch it, don't go on reviews, cos I nearly didn't watch it be use of the negativity, and I'm glad I ignored them...was captivated throughout the film....good thing about the end.......well that would be telling.....watch it and see for yourself 👌👌 18 out of 22 found this helpful. This is an excellent suspense story with tons of atmosphere, really creepy vibes and solid acting and direction proving you dont need much to create a good movie of this im not into survival movies at all but the supernatural vibe of this one kept me watching to the very the way this one works great on the playstation Vr set because it makes us feel as we are watching the movie really at the front row of the cinema and the Vr simulates a really big cinema screen. If you have a playstation vr this is a great movie to watch with that gadget as it immerses you right into the environment even more. 6 out of 8 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? This movie has a lot to do with imagination and just plain, out right, having fun at the movies. I loved the one cast member, I loved the suspense, I loved the creepiness, I loved that the cast member did not talk much, because it added to the loneliness. I really felt bad for this guy, that just went out, for some day fishing. I don't want to say too much about the plot, because that's what I really enjoyed about the movie, is not knowing, that makes it good. Sure, there's some things the guy could have done. to make it more believable, like in any movie, but I felt the majority of the time, he only did what he could do, in a really bad situation. The ending is different, but I fully understood what happened, because I have an imagination. If you don't have an imagination, and can't see beyond a script, or think for yourself, don't watch this movie. This movie was a complete surprise. 52 out of 91 found this helpful. Permalink 6/10 Please open the door Warning Spoilers Joe Azzopardi takes a small boat off of Malta and discovers a bump, dense fog, and an abandon sailing ship, the Aelous Valetta. Joe boards the vessel and soon discovers he is alone on the ship and his ride has left. On a historic note, in 1886 the Aelous was sunk when it collided with the Valetta. Things happen on the ship that tests Joe and threatens his life. He manages to avoid the large Sealand cargo vessel that killed Robert Redford and not soon enough. Sorry for that plot "spoiler".The film is slow-moving. And it doesn't give real closure. It does show a small cavern on an island if you know anything about Aelous, you might connect the No swearing, sex, or nudity. Permalink 10/10 Engrossing I am not going to go into too much detail here but I am going to say that I highly recommend this film. It had me riveted from start to end. Very minimalist and with some genuinely frightening and intense scenes without having to resort to jump scares. Give yourself a treat and watch this. 8 out of 13 found this helpful. But a 90 minute feature length film is a tad too much. This could have been easily done within 20 minutes. OK, even 20 minutes is too much, 10 minutes would have been a suspenseful drama. I fast forwarded a lot of scenes. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. The climax is an ode to 'All's well that ends well'. But sitting through 90 minutes is a torture. The trailer was good though. 24 out of 51 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 4/10 Weird Supernatural Film In Valetta, Malta, a fisherman takes his small motor boat to fish. Out of the blue, there is a fog and he sees a sailboat named Aeolus. He moors his boat to the yacht and goes on board realizing that it is abandoned and adrift. When he returns to his boat, he finds that she was released. Now his only chance is to fix the sailboat to return home, but the navigation equipment is broken. How will the fisherman survive?"The Boat" is a weird supernatural film with only one actor. The actor, the cinematography, camerawork and music score are excellent. The claustrophobic screenplay holds the attention of the viewer despite the slow pace but unfortunately the conclusion is disappointing. "Triangle", which has a ship also called Aeolus - The King of Winds, has a subtle explanation for what happens to the lead actress. However "The Boat" is too vague and the conclusion is very confused. My vote is Brazil Not Available 24 out of 62 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 7/10 Spooky Warning Spoilers A rather intense movie even though there is only one character n one place setting. The acting was good n you felt his anguish n pain throughout the didn't quite get the ending, maybe it was a dream? I don't know, maybe the boat sailed him back to the beginning? I don't know but it was can recommend this movie for its atmosphere n spooky story a different decent production. 4 out of 6 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 9/10 This was Great Warning Spoilers As a boatie, you Aquire a lot knowledge, and you have to think on your feet, should any trouble arise, and this is exactly what he did. As a boatie for many years, I watched with glee as he went about devising solutions to the get himself out of trouble... and believe me, when you are in trouble off shore... you work it.... Your life depends on there were elements whereby I probably would have pulled all the doors off, after the 'head' toilet drama, so as not to be locked in again... and would have sent a signal /flare from the yacht first, when spotting the other vessel in the distance, instead of hopping onto his makeshift raft, half cocked, and paddling towards other then a few minor elements, I would have done different, this was a good watch... and was impressed with the acting and suspense it think in real life, the dialogue would have been increased a lot more if it had of been me... with many, many profanities, but it is a movie, and you don't want to ruin the script... or is someone on board... well, I know which way I'm leaning... 6 out of 9 found this helpful. Abandoned Adrift Not AloneObviously, there are more movies about machines suddenly having a will of their own and starting to make life miserable for their fellow humans. For example, in days long gone, there was Herbie, the love bug, who regularly took over the steering wheel without asking. Admittedly, this movie won't scare you since it was a hilarious family movie. Of a different caliber is the movie "The Car" with a demonic, black Lincoln Continental Mark III car that repeatedly left a rubber trail on the face of an innocent passer-by. Even better and more famous, the glitzy Plymouth Fury '58 in "Christine". A car that could restore its wrinkled bodywork to its original condition without hesitating. And it killed those who bothered its owner. You could say that the "Titanic" made quite a few victims as well. But that wasn't because this mastodon of a boat suddenly started sailing its own course, but rather because an iceberg popped up suddenly. The boat in this movie, on the other hand, is a different story. Sounds exciting, doesn't it?It does sound exciting. The film itself wasn't. But admit. How exciting can a movie be in which a boat sails its own course? And what if there's a passenger on board who accidentally ended up there? The only thing such a wayward boat can do is try to get that guy off the boat by swinging certain parts in his direction. You can also lock him up in a small room so that he can't move. But these are eventually all the available possibilities that can be used. Unfortunately, you still have to fill up the rest of the that's what you get the rest of the movie. Uninteresting filler footage. You see how a young fisherman Joe Azzopardi leaves his house in the morning and sails his boat across the Maltese azure blue ocean. I suppose to go fishing. I immediately wondered why he had to go so far at sea for this. That aside, because I'm actually a complete layman when it comes to fishing at sea. In any case, he ends up in a fog bank and literally bumps into the abandoned sailboat. When he climbs on board to see if anyone is present, he suddenly finds out that his own boat has disappeared. And so he finds himself in a hopeless situation. Completely alone. Without water, without food, and non-working communication it didn't work for me. I had a similar feeling about "All is lost". There's nothing wrong with the used images. The endless ocean and dark cloud formations are rewarding objects for making timeless images. Even the footage inside the cursed ship with its limited surface area looks professional. But a single man on a boat bobbing around, cannot provide lengthy, entertaining conversations. Apart from a bit of grumbling, swearing, and murmuring, there is nothing to be heard in that area here. And at one point it seemed as if the film was repeating itself. The only highlights you could mention are the toilet scene and the storm suddenly coming up. And of course, the acting of the sole protagonist wasn't bad at all even if it was limited to staring desperately. But otherwise, in my personal opinion, I thought it was pretty boring. Even the denouement was pretty dull. As if they were also a bit on a wrong track in terms of creativity. That last image of the floating boating on the horizon had the wrong effect on me. It just made me chuckle reviews here 7 out of 14 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 10/10 Different and Rewarding. You need to strongly engage with the character in this, and you will be rewarded. You wont be spoon-fed information you desire. You need to figure it out yourself and engage imagination. It's not a puzzle film but will bring up lots of curiosity. Well done for doing something different. 7 out of 14 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink 7/10 Boat trip Well quite trippy indeed - pun sort of intended I reckon. But that being said, you have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit to "enjoy" this. And that may even be a stretch - because enjoying is not the right word for the experience you are about to embark yes I did it again.Certain things our main character does are ... well tough to swallow. But if he didn't do certain things the movie would not move forward. Then again, is he alone? Because maybe it isn't his fault at all now is it? Whatever you read into the movie is your perception of things, but I can tell you that the journey you might take here, is not the easiest one. A decent effort to say the least and quite the tour de ... boat/force for our main actor! 3 out of 5 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink
